Dave Ramsey: Thoughts?

January 19th, 2007 at 07:18 pm

DH's boss bought tickets to see Dave Ramsey in May.

I've heard mixed things from him. Anyone love him? Hate him? Should I be nervous or excited??

He has some good ideas and he is enthusiastic about paying off debt, which is great! But take it all with a grain of salt, especially if you are not overly religious or if you believe there is more than one way to pay the bills off...he tends to be a little dictatorial in his opinions. For myself, I say yahoo when I agree with him and ignore him when I don't.

I heard he is supposed to be on 20/20 tonight. Watch him, if you can, and see what you think. I would enjoy seeing him, but his "exuberance" would drive my husband up the wall.

I like him! In fact, it would seem that I used many techniques that he promotes (without realizing it until later on).

My worry is that some tend to see his way as the only way or that it's the best way, and I don't completely agree with that viewpoint.

I have read his book the total money makeover. He did really motivate me to start making larger payments on my debt.

He is a bit extreme however. He basically wants you to empty out our savings account except for $1000 (the baby emergency fund) and pay any excess to debt. I did go down to $1500 (I know my washing machine is going to die soon so I gave myself a little extra cushin) and now I do feel a little uneasy if an emergency does happen. I feel like I should at least have enough cash to cover insurance deductibles.

I am not sure everthing he says is realistic also - never have a car loan again? Sure that would be wonderful, but I don't think it will happen in my life.

Otherwise - Again, I was really motivated by him and would recommend reading his book or going to see him talk.

I like him. He has a method of paying off debt and teaches that method. I am pretty sure he'll put on an excellent show. I'd love to see him live. You may or may not agree with him 100%.

There are some mathematically better ways to pay off debt that how he says. However, while mathematically better they don't take into account behaviour. I've taken about 90% of what he teaches and used it for me, to wonderful results.

Pesonally I'm jealous you are getting to to to the show.

I'm not as .. how do I say this.. fervent in my expression of my religion as he is, so I let that stuff wash over me rather than let it upset me.

I like him, I do not agree with him 100% but for the most part, he is one of the reasons why I have no credit card debt.
